We posted grades over a week ago, but there appears to be a problem with the system. Dr. Beezley is trying to figure out what is wrong, but I’m afraid that campus is closed for the holidays. We know that you are anxious to get your grades, but please hold tight.

Final Exam

This is a take home examination that must be submitted to your teaching assistant by Wednesday, December 16, 5pm, in order to receive credit for it. Those students who have discussion sections with Anna Alexander must submit their examinations to her email address (ara1@email.arizona.edu) and those students who have discussion sections with Diana Montaño must submit their essays in paper form to the box with her name on it in the mailroom of the History Department (215 Social Science Building). The deadline is the same for both electronic and paper examinations.

Write essays on two of the following questions. Each essay should be 750 to 1,000 words in length (that is three to four pages, with 1 inch margins, in Times New Roman and 12 point font). Be certain to include materials from the readings, the lectures, and the discussions in your answers. Each essay has a value of 50 points.

1. Discuss the strategies used by the students in 1968 in an effort to appeal to the general public in Mexico City in 1968 and the reaction to their efforts by various groups.

2. Discuss the Mexican Miracle, its origins, successes, and failures.

3. Discuss the constitutional changes and political programs (including, for example, an end to the ideal revolutionary social types) that ended the Mexican revolution.

Those who choose to read the book on the 1985 earthquake in Mexico City can use to write the following essay:

4. Write an essay that discusses the individuals organized as community groups to respond to the crisis created by the 1985 earthquake.

Opening Celebrations for Mexico, the Revolution and Beyond: The Casasola Archives, 1900-1940 Thursday, December 3rd 6:30-9:00 p.m. Free Arizona State Museum (University Ave. and Main Gate) The opening program consists of a panel discussion with Mexican history and culture experts (at CESL auditorium) followed by an exhibit viewing, book signings and a reception with live music (back at ASM).

Meet special guest Consul of Mexico Juan Manuel Calderón. Panelists: Dr. William Beezley, UA professor of Mexican history, will examine the photojournalism of Agustín Víctor Casasola and his effect on Mexican history. Dr. Roberto Rodríguez, research associate in Mexican American Studies, will compare the Mexican revolution of 1810 with that of 1910 and modern-day revolutionary politics. Dr. Celestino Fernández, UA professor of sociology, will comment on the role and meaning of Mexican corridos (ballads) and share examples from the early 1900s played by Guillermo Saenz. Cass Fey, curator of education at the Center for Creative Photography, will explain how to read photographs as visual documents.

Enjoy delicious food from El Charro Café and sweet treats from Le Cave’s Bakery. Guillermo Saenz’s musical performances at the panel discussion and at the reception are sponsored by La Costeña.

Extra Credit- Thomas Andrews Lecture

Thomas Andrews, an environmental, mining and labor historian, will be speaking on the origins of fossil-fuel dependency in the American West and the role of workplace environments in shaping mine- worker solidarity.
The author of the award-winning Killing for Coal: America’s Deadli- est Labor War, Dr. Andrews’ interdisciplinary research has been supported by the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Among the honors received for Killing for Coal are the Bancroft Prize, for the best book in American History; George Perkins Marsh Prize, for the best book in Environ- mental History; and the Clark Spence Award for the best book in mining history.

Dr. Andrews’ talk “Fossil Fuels, Mine Labor & Industrial Struggle: Making Sense of the Colorado Coalfield War” will take place on Tuesday, December 1st at 5:30pm in Chavez 110.

To receive extra credit please write a one-paragraph summary of the event and turn it in to your TA by December 9th (the last day of class).

A Note on Absences

If you would like to know how many lecture classes you have missed please send me an email and I will give you that information (ara1@email.arizona.edu). Please note that if you miss five lecture classes you will automatically lose 50 points from your overall grade. For each absence after the fifth one you will lose an additional 10 points.

I understand that the attendance sheet does not always reach everyone in the lecture hall, but it is your responsibility to check with me regarding your absences before the last day of class on December 9. If there are any discrepancies with the attendance sheet, you can show me your notes for that day and I will erase the absence from your record.
